Bluegrass State of Mind Bluegrass Series Kathleen Brooks 9781468065343 Books Reviews

  • I enjoyed the characters in this book because I recognized many of them since I am from the South...they were very well done! I also liked the plot but, having worked in the legal field in a courtroom for many years, I found many holes in the storyline. I liked Kenna but found her to be so bipolar...one minute she's madly in love, the next she's depressed because she was told by her boyfriend's exwife that her boyfriend is going back to her...and Kenna gets all depressed & weepy WITHOUT EVEN ASKING her boyfriend if this is true. Who does that?! One minute she's kicking butt & the next she's clingy & needy...another unbelievable part was Ahmed, the head of security for the Sheik, Mo. He was supposed to be a ruthless interrogator, but only if the woman doesn't cry like Kenna...give me a break! There were just so many inconsistencies in this story & that's sad because the characterizations of the town little old ladies was spot on.. and I hate cliffhangers as a matter of principle...I wish authors would stop spreading a good story out to 3 or 5 books ....if you can't tell it in 1, don't tell it!
  • Reading about the book, and some of the reviews I thought I would enjoy the romantic suspense. I wish someone had written about the explicit rape. And the F bomb being dropped several times. I do not enjoy reading about a woman being brutally rapped. I can never un read that!! I did not finish this book! Not for me.
  • This book has an average of 4 1/2 stars. That's just amazing to me. Possible spoilers

Pros The storyline was interesting and grabbed my attention at the beginning. The secondary characters were very likable, particularly Ahmed and Mo. The books was cheap -- now it's free but I think I paid 99 cents.

Cons It would have been better to leave the sex scenes out entirely. The author overused "passionate kisses", "erections" and "breasts" and not in a good way. Plus. they led up to nothing which isn't necessarily a bad thing but might have helped to build the connection between Will and Kenna. It was hard for me to see them as actually loving each other -- but he still had his hands all over her. It was almost like a teenager was writing the book. Where was the editor?

The author picked on one villain from the original crime scene but there were more bad guys that she ignored. Speaking of that crime scene, the heroine was TSTL in that -- she should have run like hell and then called the police. Instead she bursts in? Unbelievable. Also, if the villain was wanted by so many different names, what was he doing working in a law firm? Where was the editor?

Kenna's grandmother and Will's grandmother were friends. It's hard for me to believe that through that association Kenna didn't learn that women wear hats to the Kentucky Derby. There were some other glaring errors about the Derby but I'll give her creative license for them. Her portrayal of Mo and Ahmed reminded me of Eddie Murphy's Coming to America and was almost as ridiculous. The fact that they were fun to read about was a highlight but also a glaring mistake. But it's a romance so I can forgive that.

Overall, the book could have been so much more with a decent editor and more work. I read the descriptions for the sequels so I won't bother to read them.
  • This review is challenging for me! I do believe the authors want honest feedback! Maybe I should have told her on the website but here goes.
I loved the small town of Keeneston, Kentucky! The small town people were enchanting and fun! I've lived in small towns, big cities and everything in between! They each have there positives and negatives! In this novel the townfolk seemed snarky and frustrating ( to put it nicely). Anyplace you live 10% of the people are just plain nuts! Kathleen glossed over that part in previous stories and I loved that element! In Blue Grass State of Mind she removed the fun and sicked the dogs on Mckenna and Will! I almost stopped reading! However, I trusted Kathleen and plowed forward! I was rewarded with a moving and entertaining romantic suspense tale! Why did it take more than 1/2 the book to get there, I have no idea. It's her book, she can write however she wanted. It just wasn't fun any more.
After opening with an amazing crime scene, the story became slow!
The evil doers had plenty of chances to persuit Kenna, paper trail of ( licences and records) but didn't. Huh!
Then Whitney, a pychopathic lunatic(not politically acceptable terminology) is chessey and unbelievable! Could have been easily explained by Will but wasn't!
The positives outweight the negatives a thousand fold! I enjoyed the connection Kenna had to real family. The designer shoes and clothes were to die for and so much fun! The Kentucky Derby was amazing! I have a dear friend whose father was Derby royalty! She described the event exactly as in the book. The private boxes, paddocks, crowd, awe inspiring clothes, hats and of course shoes. I loved the narrative about the personalities of horses. They can be enduring or not so much! I loved Boots and I've enjoyed playful horses, there love of apples, or sugar and a almost soulful connection!
The final 1/2 the book was sterling, moving and sexy! I continue to be in awe of your skill as a storyteller and family! I loved the book, characters and palpable suspense! Turned out to be an enchanting story!
I also enjoyed middle easterners as real people, human and engaging, as many I know. The way small towns come together in times of need, biases effect our judgements and second chance loves are so moving and uplifting! Overall a great story!
