"Another great story about the MacKenzie family. Joe is the oldest of the Mackenzie brothers, and he is fulfilling his life time dream of being a pilot in the army. He has worked his way up to Colonel and is in charge of testing new aircraft. He meets Caroline, who is on the team helping to do the ground work involved in testing the aircraft. The plane is being sabotaged and Joe thinks Caroline is part of that team. Joe needs to solve the sabotage of the plane while dealing with his growing feelings for Caroline. - This was originally written in 1992 and published by Harlequin/Silhouette. Therefore, it is not spoiling things for you to say that it's a romance with plenty of hard, masculine muscularity in the alpha male, and a fair amount of trembling, newly awakened passion in the virginal, yet feisty and intelligent, heroine. Joe Mackenzie was last seen as a teenager in Mackenzie's Mountain. Now he's in his mid-30s, rapidly rising toward becoming a General in the Air Force, and in charge of a top secret project the development of a fighter jet with laser capabilities. Caroline is a brainiac who got through college in her teens at the cost of a social life appropriate for her age. Thus, she's a virgin in her late 20s. The two meet and click. As this is a romantic suspense, along comes an obstacle. Something is going wrong with the project. Caroline is on the team, trying to find out what's happening. In between the intense passion - a steamy weekend in Vegas tops the buildup - there is the suspicion that Caroline might be a saboteur. You know there will be a happy ending. Ms. Howard's Mackenzie series is extremely popular, though the style is now somewhat dated. Still, it's enjoyable. I've read it since the early paperback release and most recently obtained it in the Wheeler large print hardcover, published around 2005. I recommend this version because of the good quality paper. If you're a re-reader and a fan of the author, it could be worth the investment for you.
- There is nothing to dislike about any of the Mackenzie stories. Joe Mackenzie was introduced in the first book of the series, Mackenzie's Mountain. In this story Joe is well into his adult life beyond the Air Force Academy. He is a test pilot on new cutting edge new jets being developed. There are 3 more books that follow in the series. This is vintage Linda Howard, but the Mackenzie men are some of my favorites ever of any other. If you like Linda Howard these are a good love stories with a bit of adventure thrown in. The Mackenzie women don't disappoint either, so they are good matches for their men.
- I was excited to get Joe’s book after meeting him in Mackenzie’s Mountain. Although Caroline and Joe were both good characters, I didn’t feel the connection between them as strongly as I wanted while reading. The chemistry was there, but I wanted a little more of the falling in love scenes I guess.
Also, the security measures in place on the Night Wing would have been so much more vigorous than what was mentioned. It was just too hard to imagine the whole sabotage plot being possible. I realize this is a fictional story, but even fiction has to sometimes be believable.
Overall, it was a good book and I’ll continue the series. - Caroline is a brilliant scientist who earned her PhD at 21. Because she focused on her studies and was out of sync with boys/men her age, she's never had a boyfriend and is socially backward with men. As a civilian contractor, she is assigned to an Air Force base to assist with the testing of a new fighter plane her company helped build. The colonial in charge of the project wants her, especially after he figures out that she is a virgin. She doesn't want to be hit on so she gives off a prickly vibe. He thinks this is a great challenge. As a man in control of her career, he tells her that they are going to pretend to be in a relationship to keep other men from hitting on her in order to keep harmony on the project but he really uses this excuse to force her to spend time with him and kiss him so others will believe this relationship in order to seduce her. This is such an abuse of power. It glorifies manipulation to get into a woman's pants. It normalizes ignoring everything a woman wants and clearly states in terms of her space and her body. I have read at least 20 of Linda Howard's hooks in the past and really liked them. I am shocked and dismayed by this one.
- Greetings. I love Linda Howard, but I don't always enjoy everything she writes. After MacKenzie's Mountain, I expected another romance where someone would get wooed, but instead I got free sex and no heart. I was finally glad to learn what happened to Joe that shut him down as a kid when Wolf got him back, although I knew it would have to be pretty bad to shut down such a strong character, Howard wrote it very well and with taste. She positioned it well in the novel and supporting events that continued the tone and mood of the scene. She is an exceptional writer with lots of twists and turns in the book, but I just did not feel like their story was a tale of falling in love. They were more like, hey let's do it, ok, and that was it. The surrounding tale was intriguing and I greatly enjoyed the mystery, but I really would've liked more sexual tension between the characters, more courting and heavy petting, and if the novel lasted more than a weekend, cool. The novel felt a little like their love life, wham bam thank you ma'am. I would have liked more time.

- I just had to read Joe's story after I read Wolf's. I wasn't disappointed. Howard did a better job showing Wolf's control than Joe's. It's a big part of his character and they made a big deal about it but I only mildly felt it. I love the man Joe became. I'm glad she didn't make him someone with too many faults. Caroline could have held out a little longer. If you have read a Howard book before you will not be disappointed.
