• What a service Larry Fine provides in this thick guide, updated twice a year, that has almost everything you want to know about almost every piano currently in existence. You will find out things that are not in the manufacturers' slick brochures, for both new and used pianos. Not only that, the book is interesting and well written, so you'll find yourself reading about things you didn't know you cared about.
  
  As a companion book, get Larry Fine's Piano Book Buying & Owning a New or Used Piano, which has more helpful tips about shopping, and lots of information on piano mechanisms and maintenance. This book has more information, but not up-to-date data and prices.
  
  And for questions and other information, check out pianoworld.com, also, I believe, a Larry Fine inspiration and an invaluable forum where you can get answers to specific questions and check out other piano owners' experiences with their choice of pianos.
• If you are buying a NEW piano "with strings" (as opposed to a purely digital [no strings] piano), you MUST buy this "Supplement" book.
  If you are buying a NEW or USED piano, you also need to buy the "Master" book -- "The Piano Book", also by Larry Fine.
  Together, these two books do not cost much. You WILL save hundreds and perhaps thousands of dollars.
  Here is what is covered in each book
  THIS BOOK - "2001-2002 Annual Supplement to The Piano Book". This book provides "suggested" list prices for almost every manufacturer and model, AND discusses % discounts you can expect. For example, did you know, that the average discount off of list price is between 15-25%?
  This book is published every year in August, based on data from that Spring. For example, this "2001-2002" version was published in August 2001, based on data from June 2001. This means that the "2002-2003" version should be available in August 2002. This book has 98 pages of discount and list price information!!
  THE MASTER BOOK - "The Piano Book". This book has chapters on How a Piano Works, Buying a New Piano, Buying a Used Piano, Piano Moving, Piano Care, and a special chapter entitled "A Consumer Guide to New and Recently Made Pianos", which includes brand by brand listings and rankings in a number of categories. This book DOES NOT include price information. This book has 234 pages of content!!
  The author has his own website (pianobook.com) which is also listed in the book, and even offers private phone consultations (for a fee, given your specific needs).
  BOTTOM LINE Buy both of these books. Trust me, you will NOT be disappointed!!!
• We wanted to purchase a "real" acoustic piano for our daughter to practice on. We first bought a weighted 88keyboard for the first few years to make sure she was going to stick with piano. We did not know anyone, other than her piano teachers, who had experience buying a piano. We did not play piano ourselves, nor did our parents. This book is a great resource. It teaches you all about pianos, care for pianos, placement in the room for best sound, etc. It really doesn't teach you about prices for used pianos. Instead we purchased for $10 online the downloaded book that prices them. We are glad we did our research since it is a big investment that we hope to keep for a long time.

  1915, Were my interests in later pianos this book would have been useful.

• Although my piano search continues, this book has been invaluable in educating me on how to find the best value in a used piano in my price range. Nothing beats playing the piano you want to buy, but this book is very useful in directing one on how to look for a used piano. If you can weed out the ones you don't want to waste time looking at, then you don't waste time looking at instruments that won't meet your needs.
