The Road to Wings Julie Tizard Books Reviews

  • I absolutely loved this book. I have no criticism for anything at all in it. I never read author bios or information until after i read a book. I am blown away. Firstly, this is a first novel by Ms. Tizard, which is stunning, to say the least. Secondly, Ms. Tizard lived this life and retold it to us in a beautiful, realistic, way that no matter your age, background, or any knowledge of the military regime, it is understood by all what sacrifices had to be made-- both professionally and personally. I read this beautiful book in two days because i couldnt put it down. As someone who lives in the South, almost all of us still live in the closet, at least in some aspect of our lives. This beautiful lady, as well as many others had to live every aspect of their lives in secret. I cannot comphrend the hardship that is. I know how hard it is to live partially in the closet, and i know the fear of anyone finding out. But, aside from the amazing gift these women have given us of freedom by risking everything for our country, they have proven to be the most beautiful steel magnolias ever born. They knew they would never be able to do what they wanted or freely be who they are, but they took that chance. I am humbled by your service, Ms. Tizard. Thank you. Thank you for all the little girls who don't realize that they have a chance at happiness. Thank you. For all of us Americans who live in this country and take tomorrow, as well as yesterday, for granted. And Thank you for my freedom and individuality and self respect and self love. This may be just another book to some readers, and I don't discredit them. But to me, this was an eye opening ride through the sky on your wings and I truly thank you. I knew it was hard before, but i never realized what you all had to endure for the rest of us to THINK that we have it rough. I will never again take anything for granted when I am able to speak the words out loud that i am a woman. I am also a woman who adores women. I apologize for taking my freedom for granted. You busted through the ceiling so that I and our sisters can freely walk through it. Thank you for opening my eyes and for also giving me a beautiful story to serve as its vehicle.
  • Wonderful book! If you want to get a sense of UPT in the mid to late 80s thru the mid 90s, this book captures it wonderfully and Julie pro and description are clear concise and so on target!

Let me start with, it's a fun read, and true account of what it's like to become a USAF pilot. I'm a retired USAF Officer/Pilot, from about the same time.

Just finished reading the book and I must say the author captures the sense of the UPT experience. The sense of risk of failure, the constant pressure to advance and the all encompassing excitement of some truly wonderful flying and friends that grow out of that time in a USAF pilot's career.

I really appreciated the part about taking control of your own training and taking on the IP(s) who weren't helpful or were even problematic. I certainly had my favorites, and those I would rather never have flown with, but one, in T-38s was so bad I went to my T-38 Flight Commander and complained. It was during the instrument/formation phases of training. I never flew with him again, and once I complained and got results, other did as well and he was moved out of the flight.... I also had an IP in T-38s similar to the character Bulldog, a major, C-141 pilot, he taught me how to truly fly instruments. A master of his craft, with a desire to help you succeed....
  • I loved the slow “ take off “ of the love story here
The introduction of characters is done beautifully.
The writer gives great detail to flying, but thankfully
It is due to her great knowledge of flying. I recommend
This for those that not only care about a good love
Story but good action flying. More please , more books.
  • A great love story; actually two love stories, one a love of flying and the other between two women pilots. I thoroughly enjoyed the detail in describing the flight procedures. And the challenges of being in the closet, falling in love and very much wanting to keep the flying job that being found out could cost you were daunting. A great read!
  • Loved the technical part of the story. I live close to an Airforce base and this story was technical enough to cause me to stop and watch the planes overhead and understand what was going on. Sad that there is still problems between the sexes that some instructors think that women pllots need to be washed out and they do it because they can.
  • Fascinating to see how hard it is to become a jet pilot in the Air Force. Written by a pioneer in real life. Today women are even part of elite units like the Blue Angels. I enjoy lesbian romances which have smart, talented, women of accomplishment in them. Hope the author has some more stories to tell us.
  • I totally loved this book. The behind the scenes look at Airforce pilot training was very enlightening. The main characters were enchanting and the supporting characters were extremely likeable. Great job from a first time author. Looking forward to more from Ms. Tizard!
  • Tizard earns her own writing wings with fascinating and vulnerable characters in this showcase tribute to women who broke the glass ceiling as pilots in military service. She sets a forbidden romance fully within the intrigue of advocacy, danger, emotion and technical savvy. A must read for anyone who loves flying or women! Look forward to more from this talented author.
